norcross golf society
OUR HISTORY
Norcross Golf Society was officially established in 2016 but our origins date back to a couple of years before, with a few civil service colleagues meeting up for several casual rounds. The name Norcross comes from the civil service site in Thornton-Cleveleys on the Fylde Coast where the colleagues were based (with three of our members still being based there today). So a few colleagues got together for a few rounds and as the rounds became more frequent each colleague invited a few friends, and so the journey began. As the numbers grew we decided to call ourselves a society, but we never really took it seriously and could have never imagined where we are today!
For one reason or another the numbers at events started to fall and in 2019 the main organiser nearly threw in the towel. However, a light bulb moment from two of our members saved the society. A simple yet effective suggestion to invite members to join from the Finsbury House Golf Society (a society for an annual Sunday driver Ryder Cup event). The numbers started to grow again and we've never looked back!
Another notable turning point was the introduction of a society captain in 2021. Dave Jordan was our first ever captain and did a fantastic job during the 2021 season, bringing fresh ideas and helping the main organiser with admin duties and presentations after each event. Dave is one of our longest serving members, having joined the society in 2016.
It was also Dave who suggested forming a Committee, which was established prior to the start of the 2022 season and now consists of seven members. This has been another huge step forward with lots of ideas being generated and debated, taking the society to the next level.
The 2022 season saw our second captain, Brian Ferguson, a founding member of the society and one of the original civil service colleagues. Like Dave before him, Brian did a fantastic job during the 2022 season, bringing new ideas and energy to the role.
Our third captain for the 2023 season is Jason Athay. Those that know Jay know he's a larger than life character and loves his golf, so we are confident we'll be in good hands this season. The society means a great deal to Jay and he has made most of golfing mates in this area through it, having moved back to the area and joining the society in 2017.
We are now very fortunate to have several sponsors, which we are very grateful for. This makes the experience for our members even better, enabling us to secure better courses who demand higher deposits and also offer a better prize fund at each meeting and additional competitions.
Now that the society has grown we are taking it a bit more serious, but only a little! We try to ensure our society is full of fun, banter, great courses and prizes. Given we now have around 70 members, we must be doing something right!!!
